Every January, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana go through the same ritual: kite festivals, harvest celebrations, and a Venkatesh film. Sankranthiki Vasthunam is not just a title; it is a promise. The cast, crew, and even the release date are engineered to feel like a festival gift. The real question is whether the film inside the gift wrapping is worth opening.

Anil Ravipudi had already given Tollywood back-to-back Sankranti winners with F2: Fun and Frustration (2019) and F3: Fun and Frustration Returns (2022), both starring Venkatesh. Returning for a third time with the same star and the same festive slot, Ravipudi clearly believes in the formula. Sankranthiki Vasthunam is that formula stretched over two hours and twenty-four minutes, with a kidnapping plot stitched underneath it to give things some forward momentum.

The film released on 14 January 2025 alongside two other big-ticket Sankranti offerings: Ram Charan’s Game Changer and Balakrishna’s Daaku Maharaaj. In that three-way race, Ravipudi’s film emerged as the surprise winner, both at the box office and in word-of-mouth. It ended its theatrical run at over ₹256 crore worldwide gross on a reported budget of just ₹50 crore, making it the highest-grossing film of Venkatesh’s career and one of the most profitable Telugu films of 2025.

Plot & Story

What Is Sankranthiki Vasthunam About?

The film opens in Hyderabad with a high-profile kidnapping. Satya Akella (Srinivas Avasarala), the CEO of the world’s top technology company, is abducted by a gang led by Biju Pandey, who wants his incarcerated brother released in exchange. The ruling party president and Telangana Chief Minister (played by Naresh) realizes the government cannot handle this quietly through official channels without a scandal.

Enter YD Raju, also known as Yadagiri Damodarraju (Venkatesh). He was once a powerful and uncorruptible police officer who quit six years ago out of frustration at a system that never rewarded integrity. Now he lives quietly in Ramachandrapuram with his wife Bhagyalakshmi (Aishwarya Rajesh) and their four children, navigating the politics of a joint household as the third son-in-law of the family.

The CM believes only YD Raju can execute this covert rescue. So he assigns ACP Meenakshi (Meenakshi Chaudhary) to convince Raju to come back for the mission. The complication: Meenakshi is Raju’s ex-girlfriend. She still has unresolved feelings, and Bhagyalakshmi, though uneducated, is sharp enough to smell trouble the moment Meenakshi walks in.

The kidnapping plot is the skeleton. The real film is about a suspicious wife, a guilty husband, and an ex who was not entirely over things. Ravipudi understood that this triangle was the engine, and he built the comedy around it accordingly.

From here the film shifts gears into full comedy mode. The mission takes place with Bhagyalakshmi and the children tagging along, turning every covert operation into a family picnic gone sideways. There is also Jailer George Anthony (Upendra Limaye) guarding the kidnapper’s brother, adding another obstacle for Raju to work around.

The plotting is predictable if you have watched any Ravipudi film before. Logic takes the afternoon off once the second half begins. But the film never pretends otherwise, which is precisely the point. It is built for audiences who know what they came for.

Cast of Sankranthiki Vasthunam

Who Stars in the Film and How They Perform

Venkatesh Daggubati
YD Raju / Yadagiri Damodarraju

Playing a retired cop with four children in a joint family setup, Venkatesh is completely at home. His comic timing and effortless warmth carry the film. He is not trying to be a younger hero here, and that honesty works in the film’s favor.

Aishwarya Rajesh
Bhagyalakshmi (Bhaghyam)

The standout performance. Aishwarya Rajesh plays an uneducated but fiercely loyal wife with zero subtlety in her suspicion, and it works magnificently. Her comic sequences are where the film truly comes alive. She owns every scene she is in.

Meenakshi Chaudhary
ACP Meenakshi (Ex-Girlfriend)

Charming and composed as the former flame who still carries a torch. Her chemistry with Venkatesh is believable, and her character functions as a foil to Aishwarya’s louder energy. The role does not give her much depth but she fills it gracefully.

Naresh
Chief Minister Keshav

A reliable comic presence who rounds out the political subplot without overstaying his welcome. A veteran character actor who knows how to land a line without pulling focus from the leads.

Upendra Limaye
Jailer George Anthony

Provides the physical comedy edge the film needs in the second half. His scenes with Venkatesh are among the more inspired in the film’s second hour.

Srinivas Avasarala
Satya Akella (Kidnapped CEO)

A small but well-written role for a natural comic actor. He draws good laughs from limited screen time, turning a plot device into a small comic spark.

VTV Ganesh
Supporting Comedy

Part of Ravipudi’s regular ensemble, VTV Ganesh brings his usual flare to a recurring bit that involves looking skyward and appealing to his deceased mother in moments of stress. Reliable and funny in small doses.

Bulli Raju (Child Artist)
Venkatesh’s Son

A genuine scene-stealer. The concept of a child who has absorbed foul language and adult attitudes entirely through OTT binge-watching is one of the film’s sharper comic ideas, and this kid delivers it with natural timing.

Critical Analysis

What Works and What Doesn’t

The first half of Sankranthiki Vasthunam is significantly stronger than its second. Ravipudi takes his time setting up the world, and once YD Raju’s domestic life in Ramachandrapuram is established, the film finds a genuine comic rhythm. The interplay between Venkatesh and Aishwarya Rajesh in the wife-husband sequences is warm and funny, the kind of comedy that Telugu family audiences have been missing in recent big-budget films.

Ravipudi is also unusually self-aware here. He uses the film to poke light fun at its own genre conventions, commenting on OTT trends through the foul-mouthed child character, and winking at the “wife vs. ex-girlfriend” formula by letting the characters occasionally acknowledge how absurd the whole situation is. This self-referential quality gives the film a breezy charm that saves it from feeling stale.

The music is another clear positive. Bheems Ceciroleo’s “Godari Gattu Meeda” became a chartbuster before the film released and the song delivers in full when it appears on screen. The visual treatment of the Godavari riverside setting is genuinely evocative, with Sameer Reddy’s cinematography doing justice to the festival backdrop.

The second half is where the film tests your patience. The comedy gets louder and less precise. Scenes run longer than they should, and the action sequences, while competent, lack the energy needed to pull the narrative out of its mid-film slump.

The kidnapping plot is consistently the weakest part of the film. It exists as a structural necessity rather than a source of tension or genuine stakes. The villain setup is perfunctory. Biju Pandey and his gang pose no real threat at any point in the film, which drains the final confrontation of most of its energy.

The comparison that critics kept returning to was F2, Ravipudi’s best film with Venkatesh. In F2, the comedy was relentless and precise in the first half, building enough goodwill to carry audiences through the messier second. Sankranthiki Vasthunam does not hit those peaks. It is gentler, less densely written, and more content to coast on its two leads. Whether that bothers you depends entirely on what you came looking for.

What Works

  • Aishwarya Rajesh is outstanding and arguably the film’s biggest draw
  • Venkatesh is effortlessly charming in a role designed for him
  • “Godari Gattu Meeda” is a legitimate earworm that enhances the festival mood
  • The OTT-addicted child character is a genuinely fresh comic idea
  • Ravipudi keeps the film light and self-aware, never taking itself seriously
  • Beautiful Godavari river sequences, warm cinematography
  • Running time stays mostly brisk for a mass entertainer

What Doesn’t

  • The kidnapping plot is low-stakes and structurally thin
  • Second half gets significantly louder and sloppier
  • The pre-interval block drags by 2 to 3 minutes
  • The villain is generic and forgettable
  • Does not match the comedy density of F2, the benchmark it invites comparison to
  • Some of the slapstick comedy is crass in ways that feel dated

Box Office Performance

Sankranthiki Vasthunam Collection: A Blockbuster Story

Whatever the critics debated, the audience had its say clearly. Sankranthiki Vasthunam opened to ₹27.1 crore on Day 1, establishing itself immediately as the frontrunner of the Sankranti 2025 weekend. It beat both Game Changer and Daaku Maharaaj to claim the Sankranti crown.

₹27.1 Cr Day 1 Collection
₹50 Cr Reported Budget
₹186.9 Cr India Net Total
₹256.5 Cr Worldwide Gross
274% Return on Investment
#1 Highest Venkatesh Grosser Ever

On a budget of ₹50 crore, the film generated over ₹186 crore at the domestic net box office, a return on investment of nearly 274%. This made it the highest-grossing film in Venkatesh’s entire career, surpassing F3, and briefly the most profitable Telugu film of 2025 before being overtaken later in the year by smaller budget successes. The film crossed 1.15 crore total footfalls, reflecting a genuinely broad audience pull beyond core Telugu cinema fans.

The overseas market added ₹36 crore to the gross, with rights sold across North America (Shloka Entertainments), the United Kingdom (Dreamz Entertainment), and Australia/New Zealand (Hamsini Entertainment and Tolly Movies International).

Final Verdict

Sankranthiki Vasthunam is exactly the film it promises to be on the poster. It is a family entertainer built for the Sankranti season, leaning heavily on the chemistry between its two leads, and asking very little of its audience in return. If you approach it looking for tight plotting, original ideas, or genuine comedic shock, you will leave with a complaint list. If you approach it the way you approach a kite festival, expecting colour and noise and something warm in the air, it mostly delivers.

Aishwarya Rajesh is the film’s real prize. Venkatesh is the reliable anchor he always is in these films. The music is good. The second half is messy. The villains are forgettable. And Anil Ravipudi is one sequel away from needing a major rethink of this formula. But for now, the formula still has some life in it, and the box office certainly agreed.

Watch It If: You love Telugu family comedies, you want a no-stress festive watch, or you are a fan of either lead actor. Skip It If: You need a tight screenplay and consistent comedy to enjoy a film. Watch F2 instead.

Sequel Confirmed: Following the film’s blockbuster run, director Anil Ravipudi has announced a sequel titled Malli Sankranthiki Vasthunam. No release date has been confirmed yet, but the announcement came directly from Ravipudi and is considered official.

Critical Roundup

What Other Critics Said

The film earned a split verdict from professional critics, with most landing in the 3 out of 5 range, which broadly matches audience sentiment outside the hardcore fan base.

OTTplay (3.5/5) called it a perfect festival watch with Venkatesh delivering a hilarious performance, while noting the predictable storyline would not appeal to everyone. India Today (3/5) described it as a decent family outing with engaging comedy undercut by uneven storytelling. Cinema Express (3/5) noted it delivered hearty laughs for audiences who simply wanted a good time. Times Now (2.5/5) was more critical, pointing to a muddled storyline and arguing that tighter editing and better cinematography could have elevated things significantly.

On IMDb, the film holds a 6.1 rating, reflecting its “enjoyable but flawed” positioning. The Rotten Tomatoes audience response has been largely positive from family viewers and more mixed among those expecting comedic precision.
